HOUSTON and WASHINGTON, D.C., September 17, 2019 – Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international technology and energy law firm, announced today that George Fibbe has joined the firm as a partner in the Litigation Department. Mr. Fibbe previously served as Deputy General Counsel for Litigation, Regulation and Enforcement at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). He will join the Litigation Department in Houston and also maintain an Energy Regulatory practice in Washington, D.C.
At DOE, Mr. Fibbe oversaw commercial litigation and a broad range of environmental and administrative law cases throughout the United States. He also supported DOE’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) office, including providing advice on rulemaking, regulatory reform, oversight and EERE programs. He was previously General Counsel of Baker Botts client Sunnova Energy Corp. from 2014 to 2017 and head of litigation for BHP Billiton’s petroleum business from 2013 to 2014. Prior to that, he was in private practice more than 10 years.
“We are excited to welcome George to the firm,” said John Martin, Managing Partner of Baker Botts. “As complexity in the energy sector continues to increase, so does our clients’ need for hands-on expertise in commercial litigation as well as regulatory and compliance matters. The addition of George will advance these objectives and provide additional value to our clients.”
“We are always looking to build upon our first-in-class Energy Litigation Practice,” said Van Beckwith, Baker Botts’ Litigation Department Chair. “George is a standup trial lawyer who, through his government service, has developed command of regulatory litigation and enforcement, and through his corporate service, has gained an invaluable perspective of the legal risks faced by renewables, E&P and midstream companies.”
Mr. Fibbe is one of several recent hires of former federal government officials by Baker Botts. Within the past year, the firm has added former Federal Trade Commission Chair and Commissioner, Maureen Ohlhausen; former Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Environment & Natural Resources Division, Jeffrey H. Wood; former Assistant Chief of the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division, San Francisco, Peter Huston; and former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Brendan Quigley.
“I am excited to return to private practice and join the firm that wrote the book on energy litigation and regulation,” Mr. Fibbe said. “Baker Botts’ work in the energy sector is second-to-none, and I look forward to working closely with this world-class team of lawyers.”
Mr. Fibbe earned a B.A. from Birmingham-Southern College in 1997 and a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2001. He clerked for the Hon. Martin L. C. Feldman on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
