Bill Kroger is President Elect of the Houston Bar Association for HBAs 150th Anniversary

HOUSTON, May 23, 2019 – At the HBA Annual dinner on May 16, Baker Botts Energy Litigation section chair and partner, Bill Kroger was confirmed as President-Elect of the Houston Bar Association for the 2019-2020 Bar Year.

Mr. Kroger will serve as President of the HBA during the next 2020-2021 bar year, which coincides with the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Houston Bar Association.  The HBA is one of the oldest professional associations in the State of Texas.  It was founded in 1870 by Peter Gray, who was a founding partner of Baker Botts.  During the past 150 years, many other Baker Botts lawyers have served as Presidents of the HBA, including Clarence Carter (1908-1909), Hiram Garwood (1924), Captain James A. Baker (1931), James L. Shepherd, Jr. (1945), Thomas M. Phillips (1964-1965), Ralph Carrigan (1974-1975), Harold Metts (1986-1987), Scott Rozzell (1996-1997), and Travis Sales (2008-2009).

“The founding of the Houston Bar Association by Peter Gray was an important milestone for the legal profession and the City of Houston,” reflected Mr. Kroger.  “The Houston legal profession played a bigger role in building the City of Houston into the major city that it is today, in part because the industries that have been important to the City of Houston, including shipping, railroads, and energy, are ones where legal skills are in high demand.  Houston would not be the diverse, economic engine that it is today without the contributions of the lawyers of the Houston Bar.  This celebration, which will take place in May 2020, will be an important one for all Houstonians,” Mr. Kroger further stated.

Benny Agosto, a partner at Abraham Watkins, was sworn in as President of the HBA for 2019-2020.  He is the first Spanish-speaking president of the HBA, and the second Hispanic to lead the association.  During his term, Agosto will focus on celebrating diversity and literacy.  “Benny will bring wonderful leadership to the HBA.  It is fitting that we celebrate diversity, with Houston being rightly praised as the most diverse city in the United States,” said Mr. Kroger.

Mr. Kroger and Mr. Agosto will together co-host the 150th Anniversary Gala in May 2020.
