Baker Botts Examines Global Renewables Investment at the Platts Global Power Markets Conference

Media Alert
HOUSTON, April 09, 2018 – Six partners from Baker Botts’ Power, Utilities and Renewables Practice, Michael Didriksen, David Jetter, Martin Toulouse, Peter del Vecchio, Gregory Wagner, and Elaine Walsh, will come together with some of the industry’s leading players to examine the critical issues facing global power generation and development at the Platts 33rd Annual Global Power Markets Conference at the Wynn Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NV from April 10 - 11 2018.

On Tuesday April 10, Michael Didriksen, Partner, will be moderating the panel session on “Global Renewables and Clean Technology Investment.”

“Bloomberg recently reported that last year was the eighth in a row in which global investment in renewables exceeded $200 billion, and that falling costs for solar electricity and to some extent wind power is continuing to drive deployment.* Today, a fifth of the world’s electricity is produced by renewable energy, and for the foreseeable future this growth looks set to accelerate. In the United States, new installations of renewable generation outpaced fossil fuels for the second year in a row in 2017. Innovations in efficiency and the rise of battery storage and smart grid technologies will be key drivers for this industry going forward. However, companies will need to be incentivized by governments to focus on renewable development or adopt new funding models to harness the advances in clean technology and keep pace with the rate of innovation, but still deliver strong returns on investment,” said Michael Didriksen, Partner in Baker Botts’ New York Office.

Transactions involving the electric power industry have been a core competence of Baker Botts for over 100 years. During that time, much of the worldwide power industry has been deregulated and privatized. Today, growing concerns about global warming promise even greater changes – more renewable generation, carbon abatement transactions and projects, and implementation of large scale storage and smart grid technologies.
