DIFC Academy of Law Honors Baker Botts LLP

DUBAI, 31 January, 2018 - Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international law firm, announced today that it has been declared The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Academy of Law’s Specialist Firm for Contract Law.

Chief Justice Michael Hwang S.C. of the DIFC Courts explained that the award recognized partner Philip Punwar’s contribution to the development of DIFC law through his authorship of the Academy of Law’s Official Commentaries on the DIFC Contract Law, the DIFC Law on Implied and Unfair Terms and the DIFC Electronic Transactions Law. Philip’s Commentaries are published by the Academy of Law and Lexis Nexis in Volume 2 of the “Laws of the DIFC”.

John Lonsberg, the partner in charge of the firm’s Middle East offices, noted: “Philip has been at the forefront of the development of DIFC law and practice over the last 12 years, and has also made a significant contribution to the development of international arbitration in Dubai. We are very proud of his contributions to these developments”.

Philip was called to the Bar of England & Wales in 1989 and has been an Advocate of the DIFC Courts since June 2006. In the course of his practice before the DIFC Courts, Philip represented the first Claimant to succeed at trial, obtained the first Freezing Order and appeared in the first appeal to the Court of Appeal. In 2014, he was the first Supervising Lawyer appointed by the Court and in 2015 he oversaw the execution of the first DIFC Courts Search Order.
